Will Trent Season 3, Episode 5 Proves It Doesn’t Need Will & Angie’s Romance To Be Good

Since the pilot, Will Trent has largely focused on Will and Angie’s relationship, but season 3, episode 5 demonstrates how the show can thrive without their romance. The ABC police procedural series revolves around the titular character, a highly skilled GBI agent with a traumatic past. Will grew up in the foster care system alongside Angie, hence their complex dynamic. However, while Will and Angie will always have a special relationship, it’s time for the show to abandon the romance between the two Will Trent main characters for good.

Will and Angie have gone back and forth from being just friends to lovers for the majority of their lives. When Will arrested Angie at the end of Will Trent season 2, though, their relationship was damaged beyond repair. To be honest, it was doomed even before the season 2 finale. Will and Angie’s foundation was never built to last as their bond formed during the most traumatic times of their lives; Angie’s arrest just so happened to screw the final nail in their coffin. Now, Will Trent can focus on other characters and storylines, like Faith in “Breathe with Me.”

Will Trent Season 3, Episode 5 Is Its Best Outing Yet (Because It Ignores Will & Angie’s Drama)

“Breathe With Me” Focuses On Faith

In Will Trent season 3, episode 5, Faith’s mother, Evelyn, gets kidnapped from the GBI agent’s new home. When Faith realizes Evelyn’s missing, she moves heaven and earth to find her. There is nothing that Faith won’t do to get her mother back, and her dedication results in Evelyn’s rescue and the best episode of Will Trent season 3 (so far). Through it all, Will and Angie’s drama doesn’t get any screen time, nor is it mentioned. All the attention is on Faith and her mother, as it should be.

The gripping hour explores the complex relationship between Faith and Evelyn, whose problems date back to the day Faith, still a teenager, told her mother she was pregnant. “Breathe with Me” builds upon a dynamic that isn’t often shown but has been teased in the past. Meanwhile, the tension between Will and Angie is nowhere to be seen. For those reasons, it is a standout episode in the show’s history. Plus, episode 5 of Will Trent season 3 further highlights that Will’s most important relationship is with Faith.
