Perhaps Will and Angie aren’t meant to be in Will Trent, meaning the writers must find a new love interest for Will — unfortunately, their best candidate left the show permanently in season 2. ABC’s police procedural series is more than just romance, of course. However, love still plays a significant role in Will Trent, and the protagonist deserves to find it.
Will’s on-and-off relationship with Angie has consumed most of his time (at least, in the love department) during the early seasons. He later started dating Marion in Will Trent season 3, but their story was brief. Now, Will is single, heading into season 4. If only one character from season 2 had stuck around, maybe Will could find happiness outside of Angie.
Will Met Susan Kelechi Watson’s Cricket During The Will Trent Season 2 Premiere
Sparks Flew Between Will & Cricket
Susan Kelechi Watson of This Is Us fame appeared in the Will Trent season 2 premiere as Cricket Dawson, a bomb technician. She was working with the GBI on a case that, you guessed it, involved a serial bomber. More specifically, Cricket worked closely with Will. The two joined forces to solve the case, and along the way, they developed feelings.
Will was hesitant to agree to go on a date with Cricket at first, despite their obvious chemistry. He was still hung up on Angie, and he wasn’t sure if he was ready for a relationship. However, sparks continued to fly between Will and Cricket, persuading him to take a chance on Watson’s character. Sadly, their date would never come to be.
Cricket Unexpectedly Died At The End Of Her First Will Trent Episode
Watson Was Only A 1-Episode Guest Star

At the end of Will Trent season 2, episode 1, Cricket sacrificed herself to save countless lives, including Will’s. She and the GBI agent were trying to disarm a bomb in the parking garage of the GBI building, but they didn’t have enough time to do so. Cricket recognized this. So, she distracted Will, grabbed the bomb, and ran.
Cricket found a secure room, tossed the bomb inside, and shut the door, while Will ran after her. Watson’s Will Trent character couldn’t get far enough away from the room in time, though, and the bomb exploded, instantly killing Cricket. Will watched from a distance as Cricket died, and milliseconds later, the blast knocked him off his feet, slightly injuring him.
Cricket’s death was a complete shock. She seemed like the perfect person who could help Will move on from Angie, even if their relationship was short-term. As it turned out, Will and Cricket’s love story was shorter than expected. But Will Trent didn’t introduce Cricket to be a long-term love interest for Will. Instead, her death served to add to his trauma.
Ramón Rodríguez explained why the Will Trent season 2 premiere killed Cricket during an interview with TVLine. As mentioned, the writers wanted to bring Will even further down than he already was (he had just learned how his mother died and that her murderer could be his birth father). Rodríguez said:
“What we ended up realizing is that maybe there’s more value in [her death] being another thing that Will doesn’t deal with — another layer, another traumatic situation that he doesn’t come to terms with … How does that affect everything else?”
Will Trent Can Still Find A Suitable Replacement For Will & Angie In Season 4
Will & Angie’s Relationship Is All But Over (For Good This Time)
Despite Susan Kelechi Watson’s frustrating fake-out in Will Trent season 2, Will can still find love in the ABC series. Cricket would’ve made for a fantastic replacement for Angie as Will’s love interest, proven by her one episode and chemistry with Will. Unfortunately, though, she is dead. And Will Trent isn’t the kind of show that brings characters back from the dead.
The only thing that the series can do is move forward. Following the Will Trent season 3 finale (which featured Angie deciding to keep her and Seth’s baby), Will must accept the fact that he doesn’t have a future with Angie. He always imagined that he would have kids and grow old with her, but that won’t be the case now.
Will Trent season 4 could always introduce Sara Linton — one of Will’s love interests from Karin Slaughter’s books.
If he can’t be with Angie and is on bad terms with Marion, Will Trent has no choice but to find someone new for Will. It has to be a character who can match the chemistry that Cricket (and Angie and Marion) had with Will. That won’t be an easy feat, but if any show can do it, it’s Will Trent.
Will Trent season 4 could always introduce Sara Linton — one of Will’s love interests from Karin Slaughter’s books. It might be too soon, especially given all the trauma Will endured in season 3. However, Sara could be just what Will needs. Only time will tell what Will Trent season 4 has in store for Will and his love life, though.
