Will Trent

Angie Will Return To APD In Will Trent Season 3

Following the shocking Will Trent season 2 finale, Angie Polaski has been trying to pick up the broken pieces of her life in season 3, which includes getting her job back (even though she shouldn’t). Angie was a detective with the APD (Atlanta Police Department) in the ABC police procedural series. She and her partner, Michael Ormewood, often worked homicide cases and would occasionally team up with GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) agents Will Trent and Faith Mitchell. However, that all changed when Will arrested her at the end of Will Trent season 2.

In season 1, Angie covered up Lenny Broussard’s murder. Crystal, the teenage daughter of the woman Lenny was dating, murdered Lenny after he repeatedly abused her. Angie, one of Lenny’s victims, was there and doctored the scene to make it look like she killed him in self-defense. However, when Angie and the GBI discovered Crystal was the serial killer targeting pedophiles, the detective’s lies caught up to her. Will felt he had no choice but to arrest her for tampering with evidence and making false statements to the police, perhaps permanently ending Will and Angie’s relationship in Will Trent.

Angie Makes An Impassioned Speech In Episode 2

When Will Trent season 3 opens, it’s six months after Will arrested Angie, who is free, thanks to a lenient judge. Then, in episode 2, Angie goes before a counsel to plead her case about why she should be allowed to resume her job as an APD detective. At first, Angie is reading from a script, and the people aren’t having it. So, she improvises and gives an impassioned speech as to why she should return. The episode ends without a definite answer concerning Angie’s future. But, TVLine‘s interview with Ramón Rodríguez does. The Will Trent star revealed:

“[Will and Angie’s first meeting in season 3] is going to be tense. It’s really hard. They’re forced to have to be in front of each other. Angie ends up coming back on the force in APD. So, they end up having to work together, and it’s a really difficult thing … They never got to talk about what happened, what transpired, the reasons why. She has her feelings, and Will has his feelings and his reasons.”

Angie is, without a doubt, going to get her job back after the two-part Will Trent season 3 premiere. The promo for episode 3 suggests she’s still working at her temporary security job, meaning Angie’s first day back with the APD might not come until episode 4. Will and Angie will reportedly reunite in Will Trent season 3, episode 4, further implying she starts working as a detective again soon.

Angie Coming Back To Work Ignores Her Big Crimes

Angie Resuming Her Detective Work Is Highly Unrealistic

Even before the Will Trent season 3 premiere, it was obvious that Angie’s return to the force was inevitable. The writers would somehow find a way to get her job back. It’s a police procedural series, after all, and Angie is an important character in Will Trent. Nevertheless, Angie resuming her detective work so soon is quite unrealistic and completely ignores how she used her badge to cover up a murder.

Yes, Angie had good intentions and simply wanted to protect Crystal, who was a victim like herself. However, even though Angie’s heart was in the right place, it doesn’t mean the Will Trent season 3 character should be so easily excused from her crimes. She’s lucky she wasn’t even in jail for very long. Angie’s mistakes are just too big, and in real life, she would never be allowed to be a detective again. In the world of Will Trent, though, Angie gets to return to the APD because she gave a moving speech about never letting her emotions affect her work again.

Why Will Trent Has No Choice But To Reinstate Angie

Will Trent Is A Police Procedural

The successful ABC TV series revolves around characters who work in law enforcement. So, it’s understandable why Angie gets her job back so soon in Will Trent season 3. It’s much easier for the writers to construct Angie’s stories when she is in close proximity to the other characters via her work. Allowing Angie to be back on the force at the start of Will Trent season 3 is a cop-out, but it was going to happen one way or another because it needed to.

In the first two episodes of Will Trent season 3, Angie didn’t have much screen time. The show made it work with Ormewood visiting her at her new job in the gated community. However, it wasn’t the same as having the two partners work on a case together, which is likely why Will Trent is reinstating Angie so early in season 3. Still, the writers could find a unique way for Angie to be a part of the story without rushing her back to the APD.
