Sara Is An Iconic Character In Karin Slaughter’s Book Series
Since Marion is serving as Will’s love interest in Will Trent season 3, Sara probably won’t appear anytime soon. Of course, this is all riding on the assumption that the TV show’s writers want to incorporate Sara into the story. If so, Sara could have a big role in season 4. ABC hasn’t renewed Will Trent for a fourth season, but the show has been performing quite well for the network, meaning it’s very likely the police procedural drama will return for the 2025–2026 season.
Will’s true love from the Will Trent books may also make a surprise appearance during the season 3 finale. Since the above TVLine interview, though, the cast and crew haven’t spoken about the possibility of Sara’s introduction. As a result, this is simply speculation. Still, Sara’s presence would indicate that Will won’t end up with Marion. Going forward, viewers should keep that in mind as Will Trent season 3 continues building Will and Marion’s romantic bond.
Will & Marion Are A Good Fit, But They Won’t Likely Last
If The TV Show Follows The Books, Will’s Endgame Is Someone Else (Not Angie)
Will and Marion have a lot of chemistry in Will Trent season 3, as evidenced in episode 6. They also share many things in common — an affinity for the truth, a strong sense of duty to their respective jobs, they have both just got out of long-term relationships, and their families are both from Puerto Rico. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean their relationship will be Will’s last one in the ABC police procedural TV series. In fact, if the show follows the books, Marion certainly won’t be his endgame (spoiler alert — the following contains light spoilers from the Will Trent novels).
Like the ABC TV show, Will has an on-and-off relationship with Angie in Karin Slaughter’s book series. However, their romance isn’t meant to be as they ultimately break up for good. Instead, a woman named Sara Linton enters Will’s life. Sara, a pediatrician and medical examiner, moves to Atlanta, where she meets Will and the two characters form a strong bond. Many consider this to be Will’s healthiest relationship in the novels and are anxiously awaiting her arrival on the show. In May 2024, Ramón Rodríguez discussed the possibility of Sara joining the Will Trent cast with TVLine. He said:
“We’ve talked about it. You know, it’s a big deal. We don’t take that lightly. It’s such a big character in the books, and would potentially be a big character in the series, so we want to be really mindful [about how we do that].”
While Rodríguez didn’t confirm that Will Trent would one day introduce Sara, it seems inevitable. Yes, the ABC police procedural drama doesn’t follow the books to a tee, but Sara is such a monumental part of Will’s life on paper that it just makes sense to adapt her for the screen. Based on all this information, Will and Marion’s relationship likely has an expiration date. Plus, it doesn’t help that Marion doesn’t exist in the books. Only time will tell if Will Trent completely ignores the novels and makes Will end up with Marion or if Sara will arrive in Atlanta one day.
