Will Trent Season 3 Resolves Angie’s Cliffhanger Fate With A Cop Out

After a long hiatus, Will Trent will finally return with new episodes in early 2025, but the resolution from season 2’s cliffhanger has already been spoiled by season 3’s trailer. The ABC police procedural show is based on Karin Slaughter’s book series of the same name and follows Ramón Rodríguez’s Will Trent, one of the best agents in the GBI. Will grew up in foster care alongside Angie Polaski, who later became a detective. The two have been in an on-and-off relationship for years, but the events of the Will Trent season 2 finale will change Will and Angie’s dynamic forever.

As some may recall, Angie covered up Lenny’s (her former abuser) death in Will Trent season 1. Lenny’s latest victim, the teenage daughter (Crystal) of the woman he was seeing, murdered him. However, Angie made it look like she killed Lenny out of self-defense. Everything was going to plan until Angie learned in the Will Trent season 2 finale that Crystal had become a serial killer, targeting other pedophiles. After Crystal’s accidental death, the truth came out, and Will had to decide to either help Angie continue covering up Lenny’s murder or arrest her. He painstakingly chose the latter.

Will Trent Season 3 Reveals Angie Doesn’t Get Punished After Tampering With Evidence

The Premiere Begins With A Time Jump

Even though Will arrests Angie at the end of Will Trent season 2, she seemingly doesn’t get punished for her crimes in season 3. Angie can be briefly spotted in the Will Trent season 3 trailer (first released by TVLine), and she isn’t behind bars. In fact, it looks like Angie is back to work in the upcoming episodes. The video shows Angie getting out of a car wearing a bulletproof vest, suggesting she doesn’t even lose her job after the season 2 finale.

Will Trent season 3 begins with a multi-month time jump, meaning Angie could have been reprimanded for tampering with evidence in the time lost. However, given the severity of her crimes and the events of the last episode, it’s astonishing Angie still has a job. Even if Angie didn’t get punished by the court system, one would imagine that the Atlanta Police Department would be hesitant to bring back a detective who covered up a murder.

Why Angie Needs To Return To Being On The Beat In Will Trent Season 3

Angie Is A Main Character

Although it’s surprising that Angie will be back at her job when Will Trent season 3 premieres, her return would have happened one way or another. Angie is one of the show’s main characters, and watching her sit in a prison cell isn’t all that exciting for viewers. She needs to be around other characters for storyline development (for her own sake and others). It was only a matter of time before Erika Christensen’s character resumed her detective role in Will Trent season 3 — it’s just sooner than previously thought.
